学生へのメッセージ
One thing I always have in mind as a language teacher is my own experience as a language learner. As a student of language, I fully understand and empathize with how difficult (and sometimes frustrating) learning a second language can be. However, I also want to stress how fulfilling it is if you stick with it! Being able to express yourself in another language and connect with people from different cultures is incredibly rewarding and I hope that my classes can contribute to your language journey in some small way.
プロフィール(経歴、趣味、等)
Growing up in Hawaii, I was always surrounded by (and interested in) diverse cultures and languages. This interest was only intensified by my time at the University of Hawaii where I majored in Linguistics. As an American with Japanese heritage, I also became interested in learning Japanese and connecting with Japanese culture. Along with learning and studying about language, I also began working as an ESL tutor during this time which ignited a newfound passion for teaching language to others.I went on to earn my master’s and doctoral degree in Applied Linguistics from Kobe University where I also worked as a lecturer and Assistant Professor for several years. I specialize in using using Conversation Analysis (CA) to explore how second language users interact in their L2. I am particularly interested in looking at the use of multimodal resources like gaze, gesture and environmental objects and seeing how participants use these affordances to help them communicate. My recent research has focused on interaction in innovative educational contexts like English Villages and in Virtual Reality (VR).
